I am very excited to bring you this article today as it contains my very first video tutorial. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that it is not a great recording but I’m proud enough of it to publish it for the world to see so please be kind in any comments you may have of it (FYI I am planning on redoing the tutorial once I have got some better equipment).
Now onto the actual content for today: How to knit the granite stitch. I recently came across this stitch and instantly needed to make something with it so if you are looking for a pattern you can purchase my 3 in 1 Granite Stitch Scarf Patterns with a free version of the basic scarf here.
Materials:
You don’t need anything specific here just some regular needles and appropriate yarn will do to whip up a swatch to learn this stitch.
Pattern Instructions:
The Granite Stitch is made up of 4 rows which you can keep repeating until you have the length you desire. It is important that when you cast on you do so in multiples of 2.
The abbreviations that you need to know are:
– K: knit stitch
– P: purl stitch
– K2TOG: knit 2 stitches together (decreases)
– KFB: knit in the front and back loop before taking the stitch off the needle
For this swatch you will cast on 20 stitches and then repeat the following 4 rows:
Row 1: K all stitches (20 stitches)
Row 2: K2TOG 5 times (10 stitches)
Row 3: KFB 5 times (20 stitches)
Row 4: P all stitches
To fully complete the swatch on your final repeat when you get to Row 4 bind off instead of purling all stitches.
I’ve included a picture so that as you work up your swatch you’ll start to see the pattern developing.
I love this stitch because it’s such a simple one to remember and creates a wonderful texture which also holds its structure very well.
