Relaxing With Yarn’s Top 5 Circular Knitting Needles

I’ve recently moved into a new house and having packed up all my worldly belongings (and unpacked again) as part of the process I made an inventory of all my craft supplies. It turns out that I have so many more knitting needles and crochet hooks than I thought. Over the years I have built up my own collection alongside inheriting my Grandmother’s and Step-Grandmother’s inventory in the last few years. Now that I have had time to reflect and organise my knitting needles (and crochet hooks) I would like to share my top 5 circular needles that I have in my collection.

Circular Needle Set: Zatyorg 11 Piece Set

This 11 piece set by Zatyorg is a great package for beginner knitters due to the variety of needle sizes with a great price point too. As a bonus each set of circular needles comes with a tapestry needles to weave in those pesky ends.

The sizes available in this set range from 1.5mm – 5mm each with an 80cm (31.5”) cord. I have been using a fair number of these needles for both large projects (cardigans) and small items (gloves) and I’m very pleased that the cord very flexible and strong. The steel cords can easily take the weight of cardigans and not have any separation at the join where the needle and cord meet, this is also the case when using the magic loop method for smaller items such as gloves and socks.

I would highly recommend this set for anyone considering getting into knitting as they are hardy, give you a variety of sizes and have a fantastic price so that you do not need to spend a fortune getting started on your hobby.

On my needles: I have successfully finished the WIPs that were on these needles so no pictures at the moment. I’ll add a picture of my next cast on 😊

Interchangeable Needles: KnitPro Symfonie

For projects that require multiple needle sizes these are my go to needles. These come in a range of needle and cord sizes which make their versatility perfect for those more complex patterns. Plus, they look really pretty too.

The wooden needles work with pretty much any material, however be careful with high silk content yarns as the stitches could slip and slide as the wood is very smooth. I have been using my Symfonies for a few years now and have not had any issues with the metal join either.

One last benefit of using wooden needles; your hands to not get as cold compared to holding metal needles. This is great for those of us who suffer with cold hands, arthritis or any other mobility issue that is made worse by the cold. The wood tends to hold the heat instead of taking it away which is what I have experienced with other metal based circulars.

On my needles: All my WIPs that were on these needles are all completed and sent off to their forever homes 😊

Fixed Needles: Knit Pro Zing

The Zing range by Knit Pro is likely to be one of the most used circular needles in my collection. In the 9 years that I’ve been consistently knitting I have only had one issue with the cord separating from the join at the needles – it was my fault for having a massive and heavy blanket on a cord length that was too short for the project and it eventually gave way after months of strain. Do not let this deter you as this was an extreme case to cause the break, these are needles that I just keep coming back to.

The silver tips are great for identifying your next stitch, especially if you are working in less than ideal lighting situations. I’ve found that the yarn slides over the join and cord very easily and have yet to have any issues moving along stitches.

On my needles: this is my emerald green cardigan that I recently started to make. In the picture are my pink 4.5mm Zings and DK weight yarn.

Sock Needles: Addi β€œSock Wonder”

These tiny little sock needles are great if you don’t like doing the magic loop method or using double pointed needles (DPNs). Being able to knit in the round without moving needles and stitches over every other minute is a great time saver for those sock tubes that seem to take forever and a day to get to the heel or cuff.

You do need to have a bit of dexterity with these circulars just because they are much smaller. However, once you have figured out your new hand position (I find continental knitting easiest) you should be able to churn out round after round before you even realise.

The join between cord and metal needle is very smooth and I haven’t had any issues in the few years that I have been using these. One tip I have for anyone looking to start using these sock needles is to always use needle toppers so that you don’t lose your stitches when you put your socks down – there’s no extra room to pull the stitches away from the needle tips.

On my needles: these are the second cuff of a a super soft pair of socks 😊

Lace Needles: Addi Turbo Lace

These delightful needles are my go to for DK socks, hats, gloves and shawls. The lace tip needles are super pointy (careful with those fingers) and are great for picking up stitches. Lace tips (or sharps) are fantastic at picking up lace weight yarns or yarns where the strands separate or if you’re holding two strands together.

I’ve also found these circulars to be very lightweight which is great for when you are on the move. If you’re anything like me you have WIPs stashed everywhere for any occasion – in the car, handbag, by the door for an emergency project when you have to run out and don’t know how long you’ll be πŸ˜„

The cord is really flexible and is fantastic for magic loop projects. If you find that the cord is a little stiff to start with you can gently submerge the cord in hot (not boiling) water and it will relax up. The join from the cord to the needles is very smooth and I haven’t had any issues with separation or with stitches getting stuck as they are moved from cord to needle.

On my needles: this is a pair of really comfortable DK two at a time socks. The sharp points really make it easy to pick up the stitches 😊
