I’ve recently moved into a new house and having packed up all my worldly belongings (and unpacked again) as part of the process I made an inventory of all my craft supplies. It turns out that I have so many more knitting needles and crochet hooks than I thought. Over the years I have built up my own collection alongside inheriting my Grandmother’s and Step-Grandmother’s inventory in the last few years. Now that I have had time to reflect and organise my crochet hooks (and knitting needles) I would like to share my top 5 crochet hooks that I have in my collection.

H&S Crochet Hook 14 Piece Set
This is a fantastic starter set for beginner crocheters at a wonderful price point. These hooks are colour coded for their individual sizes which ranged from 2mm-10mm. Most beginners would use between 3mm-5mm and these lightweight hooks retain their shape (no bending in the handle) after a lot of use. The points on the hooks are sharp enough to easily get through the stitches but not too sharp to split the yarn.

Milwards Rose Gold Crochet Hook Set
These are my favourite general use crochet hooks and they are so pretty! The hooks are really smooth and snag free plus the end of the hook has just enough of a point and curve to work through the stitches and not split the yarn. I’ve used this for a number of years and the rose gold has not faded in the slightest, even on the 4mm which is my most used hook.

Light Up Crochet Hooks
These are a life saver if you are working with a lot of black or dark coloured yarn. I’ve been able to successfully crochet a king-size black based blanket with Dr Strange without eye strain and sticking the project in time out. The light has two light modes with the dimmest being sufficient light during the day and the brightest to be great at night time. The charge lasts for a long time – at least a full day of crocheting- and if you run out it can be charged in the time it takes to make a cup of tea or have a snack. The interchangeable hooks work well but do feel a little lightweight so do be careful for any super heavy projects although I didn’t have any issues with a king-size dk weight blanket (at least a few kilos).

Soft Grip Ergonomic Crochet Hooks
If you’re looking for some hooks that have more of an ergonomic grip then this set is a great addition to your crochet kit. The soft grip on the hook handles are just right for reducing hand cramps in those long crochet sessions. I have had this set for about 8 years and the rubber grip has just started to wear down but the hook itself is just fine.

Small Crochet Hook Set
Working with crochet thread or crocheting tiny projects requires smaller than usual hooks and these are a great option. The aluminium hooks are very lightweight and the point of the hook move through the stitches very easily (even if you need you glasses to see the stitches like I do).
