Top 10 Knitting Accessories

I’ve collected a lot of yarn accessories in the last 15 years of crafting and I’ve complied a short list of my most recommended types of items along with a few of my favourites.

Stitch Markers

For anyone who works with yarn finding a sturdy stitch marker is a must. Over the years I have tried lots of different stitch markers, and it goes without saying that my sofa and hoover have taken many of those as well. For the longest time I used the plastic locking stitch markers and always got frustrated when they would break, but they were cheap at the time. Finally my frustration got the better of me and I did some research on some low cost alternatives that wouldn’t break on me. I finally found these on Amazon and in the last couple of years I have only had one of them break! They’re definitely worth their money and I can highly recommend them.

Row Counter

As much as we love our family and friends they do have a habit of talking to us when we’re counting. I’ve found that the louder counting technique doesn’t always cut it and I end up losing count of how many rows I have done. This inexpensive row counter has been a great addition to my tools and fits directly on a finger or thumb so that I can press the button as I turn my needles or get to the end of a round.

Gauge Tool

Working on a new pattern can be daunting for first time knitters, especially with trying to figure out what your gauge is (stitches per inch for rows and stitches). This little tool is fantastic for checking your gauge on the go or for checking your sample. It even comes with a needle gauge which is really handy for when your sizes have rubbed off the needles.

Tapestry Needle

Who actually likes weaving in ends and sewing garments together? I’m in the group that hates doing it so will try and combine it with something else like watching YouTube. However, I was always losing my tapestry needles – I think the sofa has claimed most of them! One day browsing Amazon I came across this great little kit which I use all the time now. The little storage tube is attached to my project bag (I may get more for my other project bags) and comes with me and my bag wherever we may go.

Scissors

Similar to the missing tapestry needles my scissors would often go missing (again I blame the sofa), but they were never small enough to fit in my accessories bag so they were on their own once I was done knitting for the day. I’ve found that embroidery scissors work great for cutting yarn and are the perfect size for my accessories bag.

Toy Stuffing

Sometimes you just can’t get enough yarn scraps together for your project so using toy stuffing is a great alternative. I love using this toy stuffing as it’s recycled and made from plastic bottles. I’ve used this toy stuffing in a variety of projects and find that it’s very soft and pliable.

Point Protectors

Have you ever put your knitting down and then picked it up later realising that you’ve dropped some stitches off the end of your needles? This has happened to me more times that I to care remember so I have invested in a variety of needle stoppers. These ones I can recommend as great value for money, they are very durable and keep your stitches on the needles.

Stitch Holder

You can never have enough stitch holders for your projects and this set does a great job of providing a variety of different sizes. These holders are really useful to have from making socks to blankets, the set that I have had lasted for a very long time and have not lost any of their colour.

Project Bag

There only so many places we can stash our WIPs and the back of the sofa can only hide so much yarn 😆 Project bags are a great way of keeping those WIPs tidy and safely stored when not being worked on. This knitting bag is one of my favourites as it has lots of compartments and can store lots of yarn, accessories and patterns.

Needle Gauge

If you’ve been knitting for a while (or just using your needles a lot) the size markings tend to disappear over time. These cute little needle gauges are great for quickly identifying your needle sizes in millimetres and will fit in your project bags.
