Beginner Friendly Hat Knitting Patterns

As a beginner knitter it can often be quite daunting trying to hunt down patterns that you feel you can accomplish without becoming overwhelmed. Not to mention of course that it’s often very difficult to determine the skills or stitches needed for many paid patterns as nothing is included in the description of the pattern.

To make life easier for those new to knitting I have included my top 5 knit hat and headband patterns for you to review. Hats and headbands are great for beginners, especially when working in the round as you generally only need to know the very basics of knitting in order to be successful. These types of knitted accessories will continue to be a staple in my knitting repertoire as everyone loves a custom made hat in their favourite colours.

In this short guide I will provide you with links to the patterns (free and paid), the skills or stitches that you need (e.g. knit, purl, k2tog (decrease)), and the equipment to get started.

All of these hats are worked in the round with the magic loop method although you can quite easily work the hats up using DPNs. The headband is worked flat and then sewn together at the end.

Cable Headband

This simple knitted pattern makes a great gift for anyone and works up very quickly. The colour choice is entirely up to you, I think a great few choices would include black, silver, pink, plum, teal, green and blue.

This braided cable knitted headband is really easy to knit up and will only take you a couple of hours to make the largest size – assuming that is you don’t get distracted by the TV like me!

You can add any embellishments that you like. I like to sew in a button or a bow along the sewn up edge.

Skills Needed:

To make this pattern you will need to know the basics of knitting (knit, purl, cast on, cast off) and how to make cables however instructions are included in the pattern.
